PR Mission – Day 2

PR Mission – Day 2

Day 2

It was the Lord’s day and we started the day by connecting to our First Light Online service.

Having 9 people sit around a laptop, with the sound of fans and cars passing by was a challenge, but we had a great time connecting with our family of faith back home. We want to thank David Tanner, who recognized and waved at us. The best way for us to respond was to wave back and send a picture.

After we finished our English service, we got ready to attend the Spanish service with Iglesias Methodist of Los Angelas!

The church started with a Bible study at 10 am, which first gathered in the Sanctuary.  After singing a couple of songs together, each group split up to their Bible study rooms to go through the Bible study.
The worship started at 11:15 am and we participated in the worship together.
The worship was vibrant and sincere. We felt the spirit, even though we couldn’t understand the language.

During the service, the church recognized our mission team! Each member of the team was introduced and welcomed by the congregation.
We also got to do something for the church. A couple of weeks before the trip, we had an idea to make a gift to the church. Greg and Daphne brought in a board of wood from their 120-year-old cabin. RJ cut the pieces to in a shape of a cross. Caroline helped with assembling the cross, and each member wrote their names in the biscuits that joint the corners.

The church members told us that we were the first group to present a gift to the church.
We were blessed how the church received our gift with joy, and we pray that this connection in Christ will continue.

During the worship, we had an unexpected encounter of the Spirit.
You will be able to hear more about it, below, as Rich shares his experience.
So make sure you read to the end of this post.

After worship, we had a chance to tour around the Old San Juan area.
Greggory and his wife, Emilise, was gracious to show us around and share the stories of the culture.
We got to learn more about Puerto Rico, including the proper pronunciation, and our hosts.
Here are some pictures of our tour.

We ended the afternoon with a nice meal at the Barrachina.
It was an authentic Puertorican style restaurant, which was the birthplace of Pina Colada.
Sorry, no one got to order one….
We had a great day, with great company, touring a great city!
Now we are ready to get to work!

My Unexpected God moment on our Puerto Rico Mission Trip

Preparing for our trip to Puerto Rico I focused on the work we would be doing. I wanted to prepare my mind for the hot weather, long hours and hard work. I prayed for God to take me out of my comfort zone which will be accomplished with the hot weather and long hours. Use me in his plan to help the people of Puerto Rico, which will be accomplished with the home renovations. So I was all set for the mission trip. Saturday we arrive. Sunday we attended the worship service at our host church, Iglesia Metodista Unida Los Angeles, then off to work to do what we came here to do on Monday. That was my plan.

So, Sunday worship was an experience. We didn’t understand a lot of what was being said but we recognized the tune of the songs, we knew the Bible verses and we could feel the strong love of God from these church members.
Then a young man visiting from Mexico was introduced to the church who wanted to give his life to Christ in an alter call, led by the pastor. As men from the church were coming up to circle around and pray over him, Greg, Seungsoo and myself were also asked to come up and join the prayer circle.
It was a very powerful moment with him on his knees crying as we prayed. The emotion of the moment seized me. I couldn’t help but just watch the scene for a few moments mesmerized at what was happening and how I found myself in Puerto Rico among a spanish speaking church service at an alter call for a man from Mexico giving his life to Christ. Wasn’t I supposed to be seeing  God  while fixing roofs or something? Then I realized, that it’s in the unexpected moments when we are completely caught off guard that  God does some of his best work.
I felt and saw God’s amazing glory and grace through the acceptance of another brother in Christ for our Lord and Savior. We haven’t even started our work but I certainly have gotten what I came for.
Love and Peace – Rich
