Today's Scripture

Romans 14:7-9 Letting Go of Life’s Trophies

We do not live to ourselves, and we do not die to ourselves. If we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord; so then, whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord’s. For to this end Christ died and lived again, so that he might be Lord of both the dead and the living.

What does the passage say?

V. 7-9 In all that we do, we should remember that we live with Christ. In the Message, it says, ‘we live for the glory of God.’

What does this passage mean to me/us?

In order to understand this passage, we will need to read the full chapter. Paul talks about how we should not judge others. During the time of his writing, there were quarreling over whether followers had to keep the Jewish law, which created an argument about ‘what to eat and not to eat.’
Paul says, our lives have to reflect and respect our Lord, who died on the cross.
In all that we do in our life, ‘we live to the Lord’ (v.8 NRSV).
What doe living for the Lord mean? In short, it will be living for the glory of God. We can also say that our life is God’s, instead of ours.
The Message version says, “That’s why Jesus lived and died and then lived again: so that he could be our Master across the entire range of life and death, and free us from the petty tyrannies of each other” (v. 9 The Message).

What perspective in our lives will change if we rediscover the truth that our lives belong to God?
How can we faithfully live today, with this in mind?

Prayer

Lord, we thank you for being our Lord. We cannot think about a life without you. May you continue to reign in our lives, as we follow your ways. In Christ name, we pray, AMEN.
