Today's Scripture

Luke 6:12-19 Faith and Praise

12 Now during those days he went out to the mountain to pray; and he spent the night in prayer to God. 13 And when day came, he called his disciples and chose twelve of them, whom he also named apostles: 14 Simon, whom he named Peter, and his brother Andrew, and James, and John, and Philip, and Bartholomew, 15 and Matthew, and Thomas, and James son of Alphaeus, and Simon, who was called the Zealot, 16 and Judas son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.

Jesus Teaches and Heals

17 He came down with them and stood on a level place, with a great crowd of his disciples and a great multitude of people from all Judea, Jerusalem, and the coast of Tyre and Sidon. 18 They had come to hear him and to be healed of their diseases; and those who were troubled with unclean spirits were cured. 19 And all in the crowd were trying to touch him, for power came out from him and healed all of them.

RJ's Devotion

What does the passage say?

V. 12-16 Jesus spends the entire night in prayer before he selects and calls the twelve disciples.
V. 17-19 After selecting the disciples, Jesus comes to the crowd. The people had a desire to hear what he says and receive the healing power that came out of Jesus.

What does this passage mean to me/us?

Before Jesus called his disciples, he committed himself in deep prayer.
Did Jesus not know who he would select? I believe that he knew the twelve.
However, he committed to be in the presence of God, for a full night, to discern and prepare himself for this new journey. Meaning that this time was used to confirm what God’s will was, as he also stepped back and prepare.
How much do we pray before we make a decision.
Yes, the process might have led us to come to a certain decision. However, we need to constantly examine ourselves and our motives to make sure we are not heading faster than God, in making any decisions. When we commit ourselves to prayer we are allowing space for God to work, instead of our insights and thoughts.
Is there a big decision to make, today? What if we commit ourselves in deep prayer, like our Lord.

Prayer

Lord, you know our every thought and every move. Now we would like to know your thoughts and your ways, so we will be able to live according to your will.  In Christ name, we pray, AMEN.
