Today's Scripture

Serving Quietly – Romans 12:4-8

For as in one body we have many members, and not all the members have the same function, so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually we are members one of another. We have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us: prophecy, in proportion to faith; ministry, in ministering; the teacher, in teaching; the exhorter, in exhortation; the giver, in generosity; the leader, in diligence; the compassionate, in cheerfulness.

What the passage says

V.4-5 We are called to be part of the team of the Kingdom. We have our unique part.
V. 6-7 God gave all of us unique gifts, and all of them are a blessing from God. Paul gives out some examples of how these gifts are used, but it should not be restricted to this list.

What does the passage say to me/us?

We need to remember that we are called to be part of this body. When we accept this call and participate as a member of this body, we will see how God transforms us. Eugene Peterson describes this transformation, by saying, “Each of us finds our meaning and function as a part of his body. But as a chopped-off finger or cut-off toe we wouldn’t amount to much, would we? So since we find ourselves fashioned into all these excellently formed and marvelously functioning parts in Christ’s body, let’s just go ahead and be what we were made to be, without enviously or pridefully comparing ourselves with each other, or trying to be something we aren’t” (v. 5-6, The Message).

We will not see the gift of growth and transformation away from the body. Sometimes it is tough to be together. We have our differences. We also have our issues. When we focus on these, we aren’t able to fulfill God’s will.
We are challenged to focus on our call to be one in Christ’s body. And when we do so, we will see how God uses us, and even transforms us.

Prayer

Lord, help us to see our purpose. Help us to be strengthen in the body of Christ, to go out to the world.  In Christ name, we pray, AMEN
