Today's Scripture

Set Free – Luke 4:16-21

When he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, he went to the synagogue on the sabbath day, as was his custom. He stood up to read, 17 and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written:

18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
    because he has anointed me
to bring good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives
and recovery of sight to the blind,
to let the oppressed go free,
19 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”

20 And he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. The eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. 21 Then he began to say to them, “Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.”

RJ's Devotion

What the passage says

V.16-17 Jesus returns to his hometown, and stand in front of the synagogue, according to his custom.
V. 18-19 Jesus shares the power of freedom that comes through him.
V. 20-21 For Jesus coming to this world, and through his sacrifice, the promise is fulfilled.

What does the passage say to me/us?

What is the freedom that Jesus is offering? Jesus’ coming fulfills the promise of God.
It is to bring hope to people in despair. It is to bring light into the darkness.
The promise is completed through the death and resurrection of Jesus. But at the same time, the promise continues through us.
Do we have the anointment of the Spirit in us? Are we reaching out to the poor and the oppressed? Are we bringing the good news to the people, who are spiritually blind?
Only through us, the promise continues.

Prayer

Lord, we are thankful for you coming into our life. Thank you for being real in our life, today. Be with us, as we walk in this world, carrying out your promise. Be with us. In Christ name, we pray, AMEN
