Today's Scripture

Storing Up Treasure Matthew 6:19-24

Concerning Treasures

19 “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal; 20 but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumes and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

The Sound Eye

22 “The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light; 23 but if your eye is unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!

Serving Two Masters

24 “No one can serve two masters; for a slave will either hate the one and love the other, or be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth.

What does the passage say?

V. 19-21 Can treasure be our hearts focus? When it can be gone in a blink of an eye. Jesus shares how we should store our treasures in heaven.
V. 22-23 What you see can dictate your heart.
V. 24 Beware, you cannot serve two masters.

What does this passage mean to me/us?

As we live in the world, with a kingdom perspective, we always see the tug of war.
When the world says, ‘What you have and own defines, who you are’ the kingdom of God is defined on how we follow our Lord to serve.
While the treasure on earth is a tool we use to serve, we also see how the treasure on earth can enslave us.
When we lose that control, we became a slave to money, and Jesus warns us, ‘You cannot serve God and wealth.’

We need to be on watch. We need to understand the devastation, which affects our souls when wealth takes away our focus from God.
We need to understand the void that is created in our soul when we lose focus of the Kingdom of God.
We fall into a vicious cycle when we try to fill up that void with more of the world when it can only be filled with the kingdom perspective.
We need to listen to Jesus’ warning.

Prayer

Lord, give us the wisdom to see the danger of wealth. Help us to commit ourselves to your call and the kingdom. In Christ Name, AMEN.
