PR Mission – Day 3

PR Mission – Day 3

Day 3 Recap

It was our first work day!
The excitement was in the air, while the team was getting up early to get ready.
After breakfast, we got to meet with the UMCOR representative and our site engineer.
We got to introduce ourselves, with a warm welcome and then headed to our work site.

Our work site was 30 minutes away from the camp, in a small town called ‘Toa Boja.’

Mr. Dennis, who is the owner of the house, experienced his roof being torn and water coming up to his house during Hurricane Maria. For a couple of months, he wasn’t able to live in his house, but thanks to the UMCOR work groups he is now living in the house.

There was a lot of work done but in our eyes, we could see more work that was needed to be done.

Unlike our expectation, when we arrived at the site, we learned that the materials were not ready to be used.
The UMCOR engineer went off to order the materials, and we decided to make a trip to Home Depot ourselves.
It turns out that waiting for materials to come was a common theme we heard from the previous groups who came before.

While we were waiting, we wanted to do some work, as much as we could.
We wanted to mow the overgrown weeds, with the lawn mower Mr. Denis had in one of his rooms.
Of course, we learned that it didn’t work because it was drowned in the water.
So, we asked Judy D, our translator to go to the neighbor’s house and see if we could borrow their weed eater.

The neighbor brought us another set of weedeaters and we were able to clean up the lawn. Like Judy says, ‘Gracious things happens to grace seeking people.’

Looks pretty good after the hard work of our translator and good friend, Gregory.

When our team came back, after the excursion to Home Depot, we were able to start the work.
The women started painting all the unpainted walls inside the house, while the men started working on putting a rail to the steps on the back of the house. We worked hard, as much as we could, and experiencing the heat of Puerto Rico.

After working hard, we were able to paint all wall, which was installed, and the rail on the stairs.
We still have more walls to install and the ceiling, plus painting all of them, but we were happy that we could finish up our first workday.
