Today's Scripture

Psalm 25:8-12

Good and upright is the Lord;
    therefore he instructs sinners in the way.
He leads the humble in what is right,
    and teaches the humble his way.
10 All the paths of the Lord are steadfast love and faithfulness,
    for those who keep his covenant and his decrees.

11 For your name’s sake, O Lord,
    pardon my guilt, for it is great.
12 Who are they that fear the Lord?
    He will teach them the way that they should choose.

What Does the Passage Say To Us

From The Message

God is fair and just;
He corrects the misdirected,
Sends them in the right direction.He gives the rejects his hand,
And leads them step-by-step.10 From now on every road you travel
Will take you to God.
Follow the Covenant signs;
Read the charted directions.11 Keep up your reputation, God;
Forgive my bad life;
It’s been a very bad life.

12 My question: What are God-worshipers like?
Your answer: Arrows aimed at God’s bull’s-eye.

What Does the passage Mean to Me/Us?

The title for Psalm 25 is, “Teach Me your Paths.” I think the words of the psalmist are easier for me to understand than The Message for these verses. The psalmist is telling us to walk with God, to learn his word, to keep his covenant. God will love us with forgiveness and guide us to live in reverence for Him. Fearing God means we make decisions based on his approval. The best way to cultivate fear is through daily prayer and worship. Proverbs 3:5-Listen for Gods voice in everything you do.

I think The Message translation reminds us that these words are for everyone, not just the people we see at church on Sunday morning. Whatever the sin, no matter how bad, God is ready to forgive them, to instruct us and lead us to the paths of righteousness.

Prayer

Heavenly and gracious God. Thank you for the grace that you demonstrate to us every minute of each day. Guide us to put all of our trust in you. Teach us to love others as you love us. Teach us to fear so that we are moved to do your will. I ask for your direction in the name of your son, Jesus Christ. Amen
