Today's Scripture

Staying on the Path – Psalm 119:105-112

105 Your word is a lamp to my feet
    and a light to my path.
106 I have sworn an oath and confirmed it,
    to observe your righteous ordinances.
107 I am severely afflicted;
    give me life, O Lord, according to your word.
108 Accept my offerings of praise, O Lord,
    and teach me your ordinances.
109 I hold my life in my hand continually,
    but I do not forget your law.
110 The wicked have laid a snare for me,
    but I do not stray from your precepts.
111 Your decrees are my heritage forever;
    they are the joy of my heart.
112 I incline my heart to perform your statutes
    forever, to the end.

What the passage says

V. 105-106 The word of God is my guidance. I have made a commitment to learn and follow the word.
V. 107-108 I am weak and wounded. See my commitment and restore me.
V. 109-110 My life is always in danger from the enemy, who tries to throw us off track. However, I do not derail from your ways.
V. 111-112 Your word is my joy forever, and I will commit my life to your statutes.

What does the passage mean to me/us?

Psalm 119 is a great chapter to remind ourselves of the importance of God’s Words. In this portion of the Psalm, which consisted of 176 verses, the Psalmist talks about his commitment to the Word.
He says how the word is the guidance to his life. Despite all the attempts of an enemy pulling him away from following God, he confirms his commitment to the Word. He is not to be shaken.

As I compare my life to the Psalmist, I wonder if I had truly committed myself to the word. As a pastor I did. As a Christian I did. However, I see how I continue to live a life derailing from the way when difficulties or busyness hits me.

The proclamation of the Psalmist hits my heart, “I’ve committed myself, and I’ll never turn back from living by your righteous order” (v. 106 The Message).

We are here together to live as followers committed to the Word. We are here together in that commitment. Join us, once more, in recommitting our lives to the Word that brings light to our World.

Prayer

Lord, we should commit our lives to your Wor. However, so many times we fail. Hold us in your hands. Pour out your Holy Spirit, so we will be able to commit our life to your ways, and live out your Word.
In Christ Name, we pray, AMEN
