Today's Scripture

Ash Wednesday – 1 Corinthians 9:24-27

24 Do you not know that in a race the runners all compete, but only one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may win it. 25 Athletes exercise self-control in all things; they do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable one. 26 So I do not run aimlessly, nor do I box as though beating the air; 27 but I punish my body and enslave it, so that after proclaiming to others I myself should not be disqualified.

What the passage says

V. 24 Paul says that our journey of faith is compared to a race.
V. 25-27 We are to prepare and train our lives for the coming glory.

What
does the passage say to me/us?

Comparing our faith journey to a race could be right and deceiving at the same time.
It is true that it requires discipline.
We are to continue on this journey with the goal in mind.
The goal of our race is to fulfill the purpose of our lives.
However, our journey does not have a winner. All who join in this journey are the winners in this spiritual race.
As we start the Lent season, with Ash Wednesday, we have to see God’s calling for us to join this race of discipline.
Are you preparing your life for the Encounter with our Lord?
Join us, starting with our Ash Wednesday Service, starting tonight at 7pm.

Prayer

Lord, as we start this journey of Lent, a time of transformation, prepare us to see your working hand in our life.
May we be opened to your work in our lives.
In Christ name, we pray, AMEN
