Today's Scripture

Isaiah 55: 8-11 Loss or Launch

For my thoughts are not your thoughts,
nor are your ways my ways, says the Lord.
For as the heavens are higher than the earth,
so are my ways higher than your ways
and my thoughts than your thoughts.

10 For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven,
and do not return there until they have watered the earth,
making it bring forth and sprout,
giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater,
11 so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth;
it shall not return to me empty,
but it shall accomplish that which I purpose,
and succeed in the thing for which I sent it.

What the passage says

V. 8-9 We need to focus on God’s way, not enforcing our ways to God.
V. 10 There is a purpose in all things. Rain is sent to this world for a purpose.
V. 11 God’s word has a purpose. The purpose is to awaken our purpose for the kingdom.

What does the passage mean to me/us?

When we pray, the most common mistake is to ask my will to be done.
Many consider prayer as a 911 hotline to God, where we can present our wishlist.
Instead, what if we consider prayer as a time to come, into the presence of God, to ask God’s will in our lives?

The Message version says, “I don’t think the way you think. The way you work isn’t the way I work” (v. 8 The Message).

It means that prayer, and even our entire journey in faith, has to be focused on asking and learning God’s will.

Sometimes, God teaches us God’s will through unwanted events. (Read more about the devotion from Upper Room)
We are thankful for those times since it reveals God’s ways.
What if our prayers, and our journey of being a follower, shifts to ask and learn God’s will in my life before we every present our requests?
Wouldn’t that practice transform our understanding of God?

After all, Jesus said, “yet, not my will but yours be done” (Luke 22:42 NRSV).

Prayer

Lord, may your will be done in our lives, not my will.
In Christ Name, we pray, AMEN
