Today's Scripture

God Is Near Psalm 63:1-11

O God, you are my God, I seek you,
    my soul thirsts for you;
my flesh faints for you,
    as in a dry and weary land where there is no water.
So I have looked upon you in the sanctuary,
    beholding your power and glory.
Because your steadfast love is better than life,
    my lips will praise you.
So I will bless you as long as I live;
    I will lift up my hands and call on your name.

My soul is satisfied as with a rich feast,
    and my mouth praises you with joyful lips
when I think of you on my bed,
    and meditate on you in the watches of the night;
for you have been my help,
    and in the shadow of your wings I sing for joy.
My soul clings to you;
    your right hand upholds me.

But those who seek to destroy my life
    shall go down into the depths of the earth;
10 they shall be given over to the power of the sword,
    they shall be prey for jackals.
11 But the king shall rejoice in God;
    all who swear by him shall exult,
    for the mouths of liars will be stopped.

What the passage says

V. 1-4 The Psalmist proclaims that he seeks God. His soul thirsts for the power and glory that comes from God.
V. 5-8 The Psalmist continues on how his soul is satisfied with the presence of God. He says, “I spend the hours in grateful reflection. Because you’ve always stood up for me” (v. 6 The Message).
V. 9-11 Anyone against God will soon end in their power. All we need to do is to focus on our Lord.

What does the passage mean to me/us?

“O God, you are my God, I seek you, my soul thirsts for you;” (v. 1 NRSV).

Being able to call God as ‘my God’ is a significant privilege.
The fact that we can call God, my God, shows the willingness of God to be an active part of our lives.
On the other hand, it shows how we are ought to actively seek and desire God.

I am currently missing a beam level from my tool box. It has been weeks while I needed it, but don’t have a clue where it is.
As a result, I have been actively searching for it. Every time I walk around the house, I will be opening up random places to see if it is hidden somewhere. After not having any luck, in my house, I have been wandering around pawn shops and yard sales to see if there is anything I can find.

The question I would like to share today is, ‘do I see how I might be missing God in my life, and am I actively searching?’

Prayer

Lord, help us to seek and desire you every day.
In Christ Name, we pray, AMEN
