Luke 9:37-62

Jesus Heals a Boy with a Demon

37 On the next day, when they had come down from the mountain, a great crowd met him. 38 Just then a man from the crowd shouted, “Teacher, I beg you to look at my son; he is my only child. 39 Suddenly a spirit seizes him, and all at once he shrieks. It convulses him until he foams at the mouth; it mauls him and will scarcely leave him. 40 I begged your disciples to cast it out, but they could not.”41 Jesus answered, “You faithless and perverse generation, how much longer must I be with you and bear with you? Bring your son here.” 42 While he was coming, the demon dashed him to the ground in convulsions. But Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, healed the boy, and gave him back to his father. 43 And all were astounded at the greatness of God.

Jesus Again Foretells His Death

While everyone was amazed at all that he was doing, he said to his disciples,44 “Let these words sink into your ears: The Son of Man is going to be betrayed into human hands.” 45 But they did not understand this saying; its meaning was concealed from them, so that they could not perceive it. And they were afraid to ask him about this saying.

True Greatness

46 An argument arose among them as to which one of them was the greatest.47 But Jesus, aware of their inner thoughts, took a little child and put it by his side,48 and said to them, “Whoever welcomes this child in my name welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me; for the least among all of you is the greatest.”

Another Exorcist

49 John answered, “Master, we saw someone casting out demons in your name, and we tried to stop him, because he does not follow with us.” 50 But Jesus said to him, “Do not stop him; for whoever is not against you is for you.”

A Samaritan Village Refuses to Receive Jesus

51 When the days drew near for him to be taken up, he set his face to go to Jerusalem. 52 And he sent messengers ahead of him. On their way they entered a village of the Samaritans to make ready for him; 53 but they did not receive him, because his face was set toward Jerusalem. 54 When his disciples James and John saw it, they said, “Lord, do you want us to command fire to come down from heaven and consume them?” 55 But he turned and rebuked them. 56 Then they went on to another village.

Would-Be Followers of Jesus

57 As they were going along the road, someone said to him, “I will follow you wherever you go.” 58 And Jesus said to him, “Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.” 59 To another he said, “Follow me.” But he said, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.” 60 But Jesus said to him, “Let the dead bury their own dead; but as for you, go and proclaim the kingdom of God.” 61 Another said, “I will follow you, Lord; but let me first say farewell to those at my home.” 62 Jesus said to him, “No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.”

What Does the Passage say?

Prior to verse 37, Jesus, Peter, John and James returned from the mountain, back down to the valley. They had just experienced a transfiguration of Jesus, “where his face was altered and his clothing became dazzling white.” They felt deeply aware of God; God said to them: “this is my son, the chosen! Listen to Him.”

The Message says: “37 When they came down off the mountain the next day, a big crowd was there to meet them. 38 A man called from out of the crowd, “Please, please, Teacher, take a look at my son. He’s my only child. 39 Often a spirit seizes him. Suddenly he’s screaming, thrown into convulsions, his mouth foaming. And then it beats him black and blue before it leaves. 40 I asked your disciples to deliver him but they couldn’t.”

41 Jesus said, “What a generation! No sense of God! No focus to your lives! How many times do I have to go over these things? How much longer do I have to put up with this? How angry and frustrated is God because of his disciples lack of faith?

Bring your son here.” 42 While he was coming, the demon slammed him to the ground and threw him into convulsions. Jesus stepped in, ordered the vile spirit gone, healed the boy, and handed him back to his father. 43 They all shook their heads in wonder, astonished at God’s greatness, God’s majestic greatness.

44 “Treasure and ponder each of these next words: The Son of Man is about to be betrayed into human hands.” 45 They didn’t get what he was saying. It was like he was speaking a foreign language and they couldn’t make heads or tails of it. But they were embarrassed to ask him what he meant. 46 They started arguing over which of them would be most famous. 47 When Jesus realized how much this mattered to them, he brought a child to his side. 48 “Whoever accepts this child as if the child were me, accepts me,” he said. “And whoever accepts me, accepts the One who sent me. You become great by accepting, not asserting. Your spirit, not your size, makes the difference.”  To enter the kingdom of God, you need to have no more status than a child.

49 John spoke up, “Master, we saw a man using your name to expel demons and we stopped him because he wasn’t of our group.” 50 Jesus said, “Don’t stop him. If he’s not an enemy, he’s an ally.” Jesus wanted the disciples to have a more generous spirit. They may be wrong in their way of presentation or teaching, yet they still set forth Jesus in some matter.

51 When it came close to the time for his Ascension, he gathered up his courage and steeled himself for the journey to Jerusalem. 52 He sent messengers on ahead. They came to a Samaritan village to make arrangements for his hospitality. 53 But when the Samaritans learned that his destination was Jerusalem, they refused hospitality. 54 When the disciples James and John learned of it, they said, “Master, do you want us to call a bolt of lightning down out of the sky and incinerate them?” 55 Jesus turned on them: “Of course not!” 56 And they traveled on to another village.

57 On the road someone asked if he could go along. “I’ll go with you, wherever,” he said.

58 Jesus was curt: “Are you ready to rough it? We’re not staying in the best inns, you know.” 59 Jesus said to another, “Follow me.” He said, “Certainly, but first excuse me for a couple of days, please. I have to make arrangements for my father’s funeral.”

60 Jesus refused. “First things first. Your business is life, not death. And life is urgent: Announce God’s kingdom!” 61 Then another said, “I’m ready to follow you, Master, but first excuse me while I get things straightened out at home.”

62 Jesus said, “No procrastination. No backward looks. You can’t put God’s kingdom off till tomorrow. Seize the day.”

What Does it Mean to Me/ Us?

How often do you LISTEN? Jesus gets so frustrated with the disciples who could not cast out the spirit in the boy because they lacked faith. Jesus is trying to prepare the disciples for his death. Jesus set his face to Jerusalem, knowing what he faced when he got there. The disciples don’t get it. They are consumed with titles, degrees, offices, and positions of status. Who will be famous? The world sees status as equal to power. As a disciple, greatness should be found in humility! It does not require someone else to lack greatness for you to have greatness.

All who believe in Jesus are part of the kingdom of God. Discipleship is not easy. Prayer and fasting do not make us more worthy; it draws us closer to the heart of God, and puts us more in line with His power. Jesus wants us to be in a relationship with him, so we can understand the divine call to service and witness, not the raw exercise of power.  People are to be won over and served, not coerced.

God wants us to listen to his son, to break away from the world and focus on Jesus in front of you. Never take your eyes off of Him. You need to have loving concern for the weak, the helpless and the lost. Do acts of kindness for others. Give of yourself completely.

Love God, Love Others, for the transformation of the world.  Our world needs us to be and make disciples.

Prayer

O gracious Father. Forgive us for our shortcomings and lack of faith. Help us to discern your will, to invite your spirit to fill us with humility and to recognize that greatness is found in an attitude of humility. We need to let go of our selfish ways which lead to personal satisfaction in the world; contrast that with grace and devotedness in your son. Lead us into a stronger relationship with you so that we will follow Jesus wholeheartedly, without delays or excuses. We ask this in the name of your son, Jesus Christ.   Amen
