Today's Scripture
John 2:1-11 Mini-Miracles
On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. 2 Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. 3 When the wine gave out, the mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine.” 4 And Jesus said to her, “Woman, what concern is that to you and to me? My hour has not yet come.” 5 His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.” 6 Now standing there were six stone water jars for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons. 7 Jesus said to them, “Fill the jars with water.” And they filled them up to the brim. 8 He said to them, “Now draw some out, and take it to the chief steward.” So they took it. 9 When the steward tasted the water that had become wine, and did not know where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew), the steward called the bridegroom 10 and said to him, “Everyone serves the good wine first, and then the inferior wine after the guests have become drunk. But you have kept the good wine until now.” 11 Jesus did this, the first of his signs, in Cana of Galilee, and revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.

What does the passage say?
V. 1-5 When Jesus, Mary, and the disciples were attending the wedding in Cana, Mary approaches Jesus to solve the problem of the party.
V. 6-11 Jesus was obedient to his mother, as he performed his first miraculous sign. Not only that Jesus ‘revealed his glory,’ but also he proved that everything that comes from him is great.
What does this passage mean to me/us?
The wedding in Cana is a story that many of us are familiar with. Some attempt to use this as a reason why we should drink wine. If Jesus’ first miracle was making wine, why not? I don’t want to go down that route, however, I want to focus on the obedience of the servants.
The servants did exactly what Jesus told them to do. He ordered them to fill up six stone water jars, twenty to thirty gallons each, up to the brim.
Think about it. It is hard work. The jars are stone, which means it should be heavy. On top of that, you are asked to fill it up to the brim, which I imagine it must have been a difficult task, in the middle east. Plus, imagine how heavy the stone jars would have been after it was filled up.
They could have reasoned, ‘you are not even our Lord. Why are you ordering us.’ or ‘it is just going to be too heavy, and what is the point?’
However, they did not reason and were able to be part of Jesus’ first miracle.
We are called to be a servant of God. It is an oxymoron because we do not understand what servants are to act like.
That is the reason why I would like to reflect on the servants of today’s passage.
Lord, here is your servant, and I am at your service.
Prayer
Lord, use us for your glory. May we be obedient to your will and your will only. In Christ name, we pray, AMEN.
