Today's Scripture

Question #6 – Philippians 2:3-4 Am I self-conscious, self-pitying or self-justifying?

Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility regard others as better than yourselves. Let each of you look not to your own interests, but to the interests of others.

RJ's Devotion

As we start 2017, we wanted to examine the 22 questions of John Wesley. He challenged his followers to ask these rigorous self-examining questions, as they walk toward holiness. For the next four weeks, we will examine each question, daily. Also, I encourage you to read the ‘One Year Bible Reading Plan’ suggested by Bishop Sharma Lewis.

What the passage says

V. 3-4 Paul says that we need humility. As C.S. Lewis says, “Humility is not thinking less of yourself; it is thinking of yourself less.” When we move our focus to others, we will be able to see the true joy, in our Lord.

What does the passage say to me/us?

“Am I self-conscious, self-pitying or self-justifying?”

Ironically, ever since we focused on ourselves, we fall deeper into these trap of self-consciousness, self-pitying, and self-justifying.
What if we focus on others. Not to please them, at the expense of our self-edification, but because of the humility; humility we learn from our Lord. Then wouldn’t we be free from these traps?

True J.O.Y. (Jesus, Others, and Yourself) comes when we put humility in practice.

Prayer

Lord, as we walk in this journey of holiness, we ask that we learn the true joy of humility.
In Christ name, AMEN.
