Not What I Planned – Isaiah 55:8-13
For my thoughts are not your thoughts,
nor are your ways my ways, says the Lord.
9 For as the heavens are higher than the earth,
so are my ways higher than your ways
and my thoughts than your thoughts.
10 For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven,
and do not return there until they have watered the earth,
making it bring forth and sprout,
giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater,
11 so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth;
it shall not return to me empty,
but it shall accomplish that which I purpose,
and succeed in the thing for which I sent it.
12 For you shall go out in joy,
and be led back in peace;
the mountains and the hills before you
shall burst into song,
and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands.
13 Instead of the thorn shall come up the cypress;
instead of the brier shall come up the myrtle;
and it shall be to the Lord for a memorial,
for an everlasting sign that shall not be cut off.
What the passage says
V. 8-9 “my thoughts are not your thoughts.” God is saying that God’s way is better, but we do not follow God properly.
V. 10-11 God’s word is faithful and everlasting
V. 12-13 Holding on to the word of God gives us peace. When we are not aligned with the promise, that is when our peace gets shattered.
What does the passage say to me/us?
Jesus says in John 6:28 “For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but to do the will of Him who sent Me.”
The relationship Jesus had with God, is the relationship he wants us to build with God. That was the reason for him to come down to earth. It is the reason for the season for us to build that relationship with our Lord.
When we are in a healthy relationship, our thoughts becomes one. We slowly learn how to be aligned with our ‘better half’s’ thoughts. In the same way, God is asking us to be aligned and obedient to God’s will. That is when we are to receive the peace that comes from our Lord. That is when we are to live out the will of God, who sent us to this world.
Prayer
Lord, may I see your will clearly. May I humble my heart to follow you wholeheartedly.
In Christ name, AMEN.
