Today's Scripture

One Year Bible Daily Reading – Joshua 7-9; Luke 15:11-32

Scripture: Matthew 28:16-20

16 Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus told them to go. 17 When they saw him, they worshipped him, but some doubted. 18 Jesus came near and spoke to them, “I’ve received all authority in heaven and on earth. 19 Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to obey everything that I’ve commanded you. Look, I myself will be with you every day until the end of this present age.”

What does this passage mean to me/us?

Contributed by Fred Sistler

Meanwhile, the eleven disciples were on their way to Galilee, headed for the mountain Jesus had set for their reunion. The moment they saw him they worshiped him. Some, though, held back, not sure about worship, about risking themselves totally.

Jesus, undeterred, went right ahead and gave his charge: “God authorized and commanded me to commission you: Go out and train everyone you meet, far and near, in this way of life, marking them by baptism in the threefold name: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Then instruct them in the practice of all I have commanded you. I’ll be with you as you do this, day after day after day, right up to the end of the age.” – Matthew 28:16-20 The Message.

When Jesus had completed his task on earth, some of his disciples recognized Jesus as the son of God and chose to follow him. Others may have recognized Jesus for who he was, but the cost of obedience was too high. Even if Jesus was God, they didn’t trust him enough to risk everything.

Perhaps someone wants to see if we are willing to risk everything to follow Jesus.  Perhaps they want to see if we trust God. Perhaps they want to see if we have experienced the joy and abundant life that came to earth as a little baby. Perhaps they want to live, too.

Prayer

Lord, we want to celebrate Your coming as wonderful, glorious good news. We want to recognize You as God in human form. We want to trust You with everything. We want to live in Your presence and with Your power in such a way that others will want to follow Jesus, too.

In Christ’s name, we pray, Amen.
