Today's Scripture

Escape to Egypt: Matthew 2:13-14

TODAY’S READING SCHEDULE: Matthew 2 Luke 2:39-52 (CEB)

13 When the magi had departed, an angel from the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, “Get up. Take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod will soon search for the child in order to kill him.” 14 Joseph got up and, during the night, took the child and his mother to Egypt. 15 He stayed there until Herod died. This fulfilled what the Lord had spoken through the prophet: I have called my son out of Egypt.

What does this passage mean to me/us

After we see the beautiful story of Jesus’ birth, we hear a sad event of the reality.
Despite the joy of the heavens and earth, with the visitation of the Magis and shepherds, Mary and Joseph need be a refugee to Egypt.
There was a persecution emerging, because of King Herod’s insecurity, and Joseph, led by the angel flees from the danger.

Isn’t this common in our life? After a great beautiful sign of God’s work, there seems to be a bad event that overturns the joy.
Sometimes, we might wonder why. Mostly, because we want the joy to continue for eternity. However, we remember that nothing in this world will last forever.
In the midst of the turns of events, we need to see this; God is still in charge.
God was still in charge to inform Joseph about the imminent threat.
God was still in charge of providing for Jesus’ family to survive in Egypt.
God was still in charge in all this tragedy, for the final victory.

Remember, God is still in charge.

Prayer

Lord, you are in charge. Help us to know it and follow you ways. In Christ name, we pray, AMEN.
