Today's Scripture

Role of a Prophet: Ezekiel 13:1-9

TODAY’S READING SCHEDULE: Ezekiel 13-15

The word of the Lord came to me: “Son of man, prophesy against the prophets of Israel who are now prophesying. Say to those who prophesy out of their own imagination: ‘Hear the word of the Lord! This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Woe to the foolish[a] prophets who follow their own spirit and have seen nothing!Your prophets, Israel, are like jackals among ruins. You have not gone up to the breaches in the wall to repairit for the people of Israel so that it will stand firm in the battle on the day of the Lord. Their visions are falseand their divinations a lie. Even though the Lord has not sent them, they say, “The Lord declares,” and expect him to fulfill their words. Have you not seen false visions and uttered lying divinations when you say, “The Lorddeclares,” though I have not spoken?

“‘Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says: Because of your false words and lying visions, I am against you, declares the Sovereign Lord. My hand will be against the prophets who see false visions and utter lyingdivinations. They will not belong to the council of my people or be listed in the records of Israel, nor will they enter the land of Israel. Then you will know that I am the Sovereign Lord.

What does this passage mean to me/us

The role of a prophet is to represent God. However, many of the prophets did not represent God’s word, because it seemed to be too harsh for the people. Instead of representing God’s ways, they compromised to the ways of the people.
When they walked away from their role, the people further walked away from God’s will.
That is the responsibility we have as a deliverer of God’s words.
I pray that I will take that responsibility seriously. I pray that I will be ‘strong and courageous’ to follow God’s call, even though it might be harsh. I pray that I will be faithful to God’s will and not see how my will or thoughts are projected in God’s will.
In the same way, we are called to deliver God’s will to this world.
We are called to do it with wisdom and courage.
It is a great honor and serious task. Will you join me in this call today?

Prayer

Lord, help us to have the wisdom and courage to carry out your will today. Enlighten us and strengthen us. We pray in Christ name, AMEN.
