Today's Scripture

Who you follow – Isaiah 20

TODAY’S READING SCHEDULE: Isaiah 18-22

In the year that the supreme commander, sent by Sargon king of Assyria, came to Ashdod and attacked and captured it— at that time the Lord spoke through Isaiah son of Amoz. He said to him, “Take off the sackcloth from your body and the sandals from your feet.” And he did so, going around stripped and barefoot.

Then the Lord said, “Just as my servant Isaiah has gone stripped and barefoot for three years, as a sign and portent against Egypt and Cush,[e] so the king of Assyria will lead away stripped and barefoot the Egyptian captives and Cushite exiles, young and old, with buttocks bared—to Egypt’s shame. Those who trusted in Cush and boasted in Egypt will be dismayed and put to shame. In that day the people who live on this coast will say, ‘See what has happened to those we relied on, those we fled to for help and deliverance from the king of Assyria! How then can we escape?’”

What does this passage mean to me/us

This is one of the shortest chapters in Isaiah.
It starts by showing Isaiah’s obedience to follow God’s command. He lived barefooted for three years. We can quickly skim through the verse and forget the weight of the command. He still followed what God asked him to do, even though it might have been tough to understand the logic.

On the other hand, we see the people of Israel, who were debating on making a treaty with Egypt or Assyria. Instead of putting their full trust in God, who was asked as God’s nation, they were contemplating on ignoring God’s command and finding a logical alternative. See what they experienced when this prophecy became a reality.

Then it comes to a question, can we still follow God’s way when it might seem illogical, or will we choose a logical alternative, even though it goes against God’s will.

Prayer

Lord, give us the wisdom to know your will. Give us to courage to follow your ways.  In Christ name, AMEN.
