Words Do Matter – Proverbs 15:1-7
TODAY’S READING SCHEDULE: Proverbs 13 – 15
“A gentle answer turns away wrath, but harsh words stir up anger. The tongue of the wise makes knowledge appealing, but the mouth of a fool spouts only foolishness. The Lord is watching everywhere, keeping his eye on both the evil and the good. Gentle words bring life and health; a deceitful tongue crushes the spirit. Only a fool despises a parent’s discipline; whoever learns from correction is wise. There is treasure in the house of the godly, but the earnings of the wicked bring trouble. The lips of the wise give good advice; the heart of a fool has none to give.” Proverbs 15:1-7 NLT
What does this passage mean to me/us
These verses ring true for any day, any age. They highlight the importance of the spoken word to lead others to knowledge or be destructive when used recklessly or harshly. We have all felt the sting of words said unkindly, words that tear us down instead of lift us up. And we’ve also felt the sunshine in our souls when we receive a complement or words expressed in true love. Solomon shared his wisdom about the spoken word, and we are reminded when we read these verses that we honor our Lord Jesus Christ when we think about the words we speak. Remember that a soft answer turns away wrath but a harsh word stirs up anger and causes hurt to others. – contributed by Sarah Pero
Prayer
Dear Lord Jesus, I would ask that Your Holy Spirit would guide my speech daily and that I might daily honor you with the words I speak. Forgive me when I fail to be kind with my words. May I share Your love with others thru the words I speak every day. In Your Name I pray, Amen
