Margaret Harvey Starkey died at the Veterans Administration Medical Center on Wednesday, March 16, 2016, with friends in attendance. She had attained the age of 93 years.She was the daughter of the late Joseph and Florence Starkey and was also predeceased by her brother, Joseph G. Starkey Jr.Among her many friends were Aubrey and Beatrice Meador. Her long life was devoted to the service of her country and its citizens. After four years of higher education at the Medical College of Virginia, she served in the Armed Forces during World War II and then was a Registered Nurse at the VA Medical Center in Salem, Va., for over 35 years. During her career and after retirement, she remained active with the American Legion, the Daughters of the American Revolution, The Roanoke City Republican Commission, the Historical Society of Western Virginia, and the Raleigh Court United Methodist Friendship Class.A simple graveside service is planned at Evergreen Burial Park at 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 19, 2016.Memorials may be made to the Raleigh Court United Methodist Church. Dorothy Lucille Stanley Sharpley, 94, of Roanoke, ran through the gates of Heaven to be with Winston, on Thursday, March 17, 2016. Born in Roanoke, Va. on August 8, 1921, Dot is preceded in death by her parents, Raymond Forest Stanley and Alice Elizabeth Hess Stanley, as well as her beloved husband, Winston Sheppard Sharpley. She is survived by her son, Ronald Sheppard Sharpley and wife Teresa Kay Hamilton Sharpley. Also surviving are her three treasured grandchildren and their spouses, Walter Sheppard Sharpley (Stephanie), Sarah Courtney Sharpley Carino (Brian), and Lauren Elizabeth Sharpley Hartman (Andrew). Dot cherished her five great-grandchildren, Ethan, Carson, Landon, Katelyn, and Wyatt. Dot was a longtime member of Raleigh Court United Methodist Church, where she volunteered untold hours of love. She was a member of the Breckinridge Chapter of the DAR, the William Watts Chapter of the U.D.C., and the Rosalind Hills Garden Club. Dot was the happiest when she was with her family, her friends, gardening, reading, and doing for others. Her zeal, zest, and positive outlook on life could not be surpassed. Heartfelt thanks to South Roanoke Nursing Home for their kindness and compassion during her recent care. Memorials may be made to Raleigh Court United Methodist Church, 1706 Grandin Rd., Roanoke, Va. 24015. A private family graveside service to celebrate her life will be held at Evergreen Burial Park.
