The Stones Will Cry Out – Luke: 19: 28-40
28 After he had said this, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem.
29 When he had come near Bethphage and Bethany, at the place called the Mount of Olives, he sent two of the disciples, 30 saying, “Go into the village ahead of you, and as you enter it you will find tied there a colt that has never been ridden. Untie it and bring it here. 31 If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ just say this, ‘The Lord needs it.’” 32 So those who were sent departed and found it as he had told them. 33 As they were untying the colt, its owners asked them, “Why are you untying the colt?” 34 They said, “The Lord needs it.” 35 Then they brought it to Jesus; and after throwing their cloaks on the colt, they set Jesus on it. 36 As he rode along, people kept spreading their cloaks on the road. 37 As he was now approaching the path down from the Mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to praise God joyfully with a loud voice for all the deeds of power that they had seen, 38 saying,
“Blessed is the king
who comes in the name of the Lord!
Peace in heaven,
and glory in the highest heaven!”
39 Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, order your disciples to stop.” 40 He answered, “I tell you, if these were silent, the stones would shout out.”
What does the Passage say?
V. 28-36 Jesus orders his disciples to go into the city and bring back a colt. This was to fulfill the prophecy. It says, “Be full of joy, O people of Zion! Call out in a loud voice, O people of Jerusalem! See, your King is coming to you. He is fair and good and has the power to save. He is not proud and sits on a donkey, on the son of a female donkey” (Zechariah 9:9 NLV)
V. 37-40 The people also play a part in fulfilling the prophecy. They should have been aware of this prophecy, and when they saw Jesus entering the city with this donkey, they knew what they needed to do. So they shouted out ‘in loud voices for all the miracles they had seen’ (v. 37 NIV).
What does the Passage say to me/us?
What is our part in the promise?
Whether the people understood the true meaning of the prophecy or not, we have to see how the people responded to the prophecy.
First, it ways that they were in a joy of witnessing the miracle. It shows evidence that their teaching of the word had led them to notice the prophecy being fulfilled. We live in a Bible illiterate generation. Do we have the understanding of the word to notice a promise being fulfilled in our eyes?
Second, they knew how to respond to the prophecy. They shouted out, with all their might, to a point, annoying the Pharisees. The Pharisees ask Jesus to silence them, but Jesus validates their action since it was fulfilling the prophecy. He says, “if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out” (v. 40 NIV). Is there a promise of God to be fulfilled by us, but we are not noticing our part? By any chance, is the world, or another voice, proclaiming the promise to be fulfilled? What is it for us to do?
