Old Fish, New Fish – Matthew 22:34-40
The Greatest Commandment
34 When the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together,35 and one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question to test him. 36 “Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest?” 37 He said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the greatest and first commandment. 39 And a second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.”
I would like to apologize for not sending out the daily devotion posts. I encountered situations, two days in a row, which prevented me from uploading the posts. Sorry again.
Also, I noticed the schedule that was sent out on Monday was last week’s reading schedule.
Click here is the current schedule.
What does the Passage say?
V. 34-40 Jesus didn’t come to the world to offer something new. When the teacher of the law came to him and ask ‘what was required for God’s people’ this is what Jesus said. “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind’ (v. 37 NRSV) When we love God, we need to love God with all that we have. As a result, we should focus on loving others, as much as we love ourselves. Since God loves us, we ought to love others, the way God loves us.
What does the Passage say to me/us?
We are not defined as a follower of Christ because we put a fish on the back of our car. (Not to put anyone down, who has a fish sticker. I admire your faith and eagerness to share the good news. Please read the devotion from Upper room). We are called disciples when we follow the greatest commandment of Love.
In our words, we are to ‘Love God, Love Others, for the transformation of the World.’
When we love, we are asked to love with all our soul, heart, and mind. We are asked to love with all that we have.
Do we really love God?
If so, does our love project to others?
On September 18th, we will rally around the purpose of loving others. Our Rally day celebration will be focused on how we can grow in love to truly love others, through our small group experience.
So please keep this in mind, and pray for that day. That it will be a time to challenge us and transform us.
Also, please remember that your presence on that day is really important for our church.
Prayer
Lord, help us to truly follow your ways. Let our love for you and others, shine through our day. In Christ name we pray, AMEN
