Today's Scripture

The Best For Last John 2:1 -12

On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. When the wine gave out, the mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine.” And Jesus said to her, “Woman, what concern is that to you and to me? My hour has not yet come.” His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.” Now standing there were six stone water jars for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons. Jesus said to them, “Fill the jars with water.” And they filled them up to the brim. He said to them, “Now draw some out, and take it to the chief steward.” So they took it. When the steward tasted the water that had become wine, and did not know where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew), the steward called the bridegroom 10 and said to him, “Everyone serves the good wine first, and then the inferior wine after the guests have become drunk. But you have kept the good wine until now.” 11 Jesus did this, the first of his signs, in Cana of Galilee, and revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.

What does the passage say?

V. 1-5 Jesus was at the wedding of Cana and the wine gave up. Mary asks him to do something and intends not to. However, Mary goes ahead and asks the servants to listen to what he says.
V. 6-11 The servants did what he said. The servants filled up the six stone jars, with water, and brought them to the chief steward. The chief steward was amazed by the quality of the wine.

What does this passage mean to me/us?

We see two points in this well-known story.
First, Jesus listens to his mother, despite what he thinks. He was clear, in his intent, when he said, ““Woman, what concern is that to you and to me? My hour has not yet come” (v. 4 NRSV). However, he was obedient to his mother. (I imagine this scene, by Jesus, with a deep sigh, trying to clean up the mess Mary made. But he still did it.)
There is the obedience of the servants who followed his orders. It might have sounded ridiculous, but they still did so. What would they have been thinking, while they had to fill up the six stone jars? However, they did so.
As a result of these two kinds of obedience, a miracle happened in the party.
The people were able to continue to enjoy the time, but also it became a turning point for Jesus’ disciples.
It says, “Jesus did this, the first of his signs, in Cana of Galilee, and revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him” (v. 11 NRSV).
What if our obedience might help someone fully trust in God? Wouldn’t that be a worthy reason to be obedient to the world, even with a bit of grumbling?

Prayer

Lord, help us to be obedient to your word, and your word only. Mold our hearts to be obedient to your will, and speak to us today.
In Christ Name, AMEN.
