Today's Scripture

Handwritten Encouragement 1 Thess 5:1-11

Now concerning the times and the seasons, brothers and sisters, you do not need to have anything written to you. For you yourselves know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. When they say, “There is peace and security,” then sudden destruction will come upon them, as labor pains come upon a pregnant woman, and there will be no escape! But you, beloved, are not in darkness, for that day to surprise you like a thief; for you are all children of light and children of the day; we are not of the night or of darkness. So then let us not fall asleep as others do, but let us keep awake and be sober; for those who sleep sleep at night, and those who are drunk get drunk at night. But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, and put on the breastplate of faith and love, and for a helmet the hope of salvation. For God has destined us not for wrath but for obtaining salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, 10 who died for us, so that whether we are awake or asleep we may live with him. 11 Therefore encourage one another and build up each other, as indeed you are doing.

What does the passage say?

V. 1-3 The day of the Lord, coming again, will happen out of surprise
V. 4-8 We are the children of light, so let us know fall asleep, spiritually.
V. 9-11 God’s intent is not to punish. As we see in Jesus, God is full of grace. So let’s share this grace with others.

What does this passage mean to me/us?

We are called to live as children of light. We are to do our due diligence to be spiritually awake.
It is because we believe that our Lord will come again. Our master appointed us with a purpose. A purpose to become a blessing to the world. It is to share the grace of our Lord to the people, who are in darkness. The reason why we say, the people in darkness, is because we believe God’s grace, projected through Jesus Christ is the true light of the world.
But once we fall into the trap of complacency, even though we are called to be the children of light, the returning of our master will not be pleasant. It is like the parable of the talent.
In the Message Bible, it says, “About the time everybody’s walking around complacently, congratulating each other—“We’ve sure got it made! Now we can take it easy!”—suddenly everything will fall apart” (v. 3 The Message).

We are called to be awakened to live faithful for our purpose.
Are we awake?

Prayer

Lord, awaken our spirit for your glory. Come, Lord Jesus!
In Christ Name, AMEN.
