A Concert of God’s Word – Psalm 100:1-5

A Psalm of thanksgiving.

Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth.
    Worship the Lord with gladness;
    come into his presence with singing.

Know that the Lord is God.
    It is he that made us, and we are his;[a]
    we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.

Enter his gates with thanksgiving,
    and his courts with praise.
    Give thanks to him, bless his name.

For the Lord is good;
    his steadfast love endures forever,
    and his faithfulness to all generations.

What does the Passage say?

Psalm 100 does not indicate who the Psalmist was, but traditionally, we understand it was written by King David. In this Psalm, David, exhorts the world to join in the unending hymn of praising our Lord. It can be said that it was one of the Psalms that people memorized to continue to motivate their heart of praise. Maybe this is the reason why the devotion in Upper Room mentioned Bible memorization.

V. 1-3 ‘Knowing that the Lord is God.’ Do we consider God as our Lord? Is it only a line of a song, or a confession of our heart? The exhortation of the Psalmist, for us to engage in worship, starts with the undeniable understanding that God is the Lord of our life.

V. 4 The time of worship needs to be a place and time where we lay down our burdens and be strengthened by the touch of our Lord. However, at the same time, it should be a place for us to ‘count the blessings’ of our lives. Only through thanksgiving can we truly see the working hand of our Lord

V. 5 There will be times, in our life, that it will seem to be difficult seeing God’s governing hand. However, most of the Psalmist confess their trust in God. Even during the hardship, they proclaim the goodness of our Lord.

What does the Passage say to me/us?

When we are swamped with the demands of our Lord, we can quickly lose sight of who God is and what God is doing in our lives. Worship is a way to awaken us, and to remember who God is. When we do that properly, we see how God empowers us to continue to live for the glory of our Lord.

Probably, that might be the reason why the contributor for Upper Room devotion mentioned Bible memorizing. When we memorize the Word, we can be firmly rooted in faith.

Through the Psalm, we proclaim our allegiance to our Lord, prayer of thanksgiving and reliance, all in one time. When we read this out, and even memories it, the Word becomes a proclamation of our faith, and even becomes alive.

Prayer

Lord, we commit to follow you, and you only. Be with us, so we can live with life with thanksgiving and your power. In Christ Name we pray, AMEN.
