John 2:1-11

On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. When the wine gave out, the mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine.”And Jesus said to her, “Woman, what concern is that to you and to me? My hour has not yet come.” His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”Now standing there were six stone water jars for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons. Jesus said to them, “Fill the jars with water.” And they filled them up to the brim. He said to them, “Now draw some out, and take it to the chief steward.” So they took it. When the steward tasted the water that had become wine, and did not know where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew), the steward called the bridegroom10 and said to him, “Everyone serves the good wine first, and then the inferior wine after the guests have become drunk. But you have kept the good wine until now.”11 Jesus did this, the first of his signs, in Cana of Galilee, and revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.

What does the Passage say?

V. 1-5 Jesus, his mother, and disciples were invited to a wedding at Cana. As we are familiar, the party falls short of its wine supply. Mary steps into the scene and tells the servants to follow Jesus’ lead, despite Jesus saying, “Woman, what concern is that to you and to me? My hour has not yet come.” (v. 4 NRSV)

V. 6-11 When the servants follow Jesus’ order to fill jugs of water into the jars, up to the brim, they experience how water turns into best quality wine.

What does this Passage say to me/ us?

Today is election day. Somehow everyone will admit that it is different from many other elections. Some are still eager to vote for their candidate, and some might be hesitant to participate in this day.

As I was reading this passage, I thought about the election in God’s eyes. When we pray about the election, wouldn’t God say… “Woman [People of God], what concern is that to you and to me? My hour has not yet come.” God’s Kingdom is yet to come. Regardless of who becomes the president of this country, God is still the Lord above all.

However, God listens to our prayers. God also has to power to change water into wine. God can turn the worst into good. (Sorry, I just can’t use the word ‘best’ at this time.)

We are called to pray for this nation. We are called to pray that God’s will is done, despite our thoughts and political stances.

May your will be done.
