John 7:37 – 39 Hungry and Thirsty

Rivers of Living Water

37 On the last day of the festival, the great day, while Jesus was standing there, he cried out, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me, 38 and let the one who believes in me drink. As the scripture has said, ‘Out of the believer’s heart shall flow rivers of living water.’” 39 Now he said this about the Spirit, which believers in him were to receive; for as yet there was no Spirit, because Jesus was not yet glorified.

What does the Passage say?

V. 37 – 38 The reason why Jesus came to this world is to offer the true living water. The water that quenches our soul. The water that brings life, out of death. The water is available for all who are willing to follow him, and when we do it, the water flows out of his followers. That is how the living water continues to bless this world.

V. 39 The Holy Spirit is our helper and counselor. Holy Spirit became more active after Jesus ascended into heaven. There was a reason why Jesus’ time and the time of the Holy Spirit didn’t overlap that much. It was God’s way to empower God’s followers. When we decide to follow the way, God will provide the strength.

What does this Passage say to me/ us?

Am I filled with the living water, working through me? Sometimes we get so busy with the world, we forget to remain close to the living water. It is the source of life, and the source of ultimate joy. However, even as followers, we distance ourselves from the stream of living water. Being away from the source of life, limites us to see the presence of the water in our life, and also limits us to share it with others.
I pray that this holiday will be an opprotunity for us to step back from the busyness and reconnect with the source of life, which comes from our Lord.
Prayer

Lord, grant us your peace and love, for all who come to the source of life. Help us to share the blessing with others.

In your name, Jesus Christ, we pray,  AMEN
