Trusting God – Romans 8: 28 – 31
8 We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose. 29 For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn within a large family. 30 And those whom he predestined he also called; and those whom he called he also justified; and those whom he justified he also glorified.
God’s Love in Christ Jesus
31 What then are we to say about these things? If God is for us, who is against us?
What does the passage say?
V. 28 – 31 God has called us for God’s purpose. For the ones, who are called, God will lead them, make sure all work together, in God’s time, and be glorified through the ones who are called.
What does this mean to me/ us?
“We all know that all things work together for good,” (v. 28 NRSV).
Romans 8:28 is one of my favorite Bible verses. I first learned this Bible verse, when things in my life didn’t pan out the way I wanted. That is when my mother introduced me to this verse. The true reason why I love this verse is not only because I saw how God made all things good, out of a bad situation in my life, but also how God changed my perspective and faith.
If my faith, at that point, dwelled in a phase of asking God to help me so ‘my will will be done,’ it changed to ‘thy will be done.’ The latter part of this verse follows, “for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose” (v. 28b NRSV). I slowly learned that there is a prerequisite.
Christianity is a journey of letting go of my will and being obedient to God’s will. Christianity is a journey that we walk because we are called. Christianity has a sole goal, for God to be glorified through our lives.
However, so many people, even Christians, live for their own glory. So many Christians fight for their own will to be down. Even some refuse to be submissive to God’s will because their will is so strong.
Hope nobody feels like I am criticizing them. That Christians was who I was before I knew this verse. That Christians was who I was before I deeply reflected on the meaning of this verse. So as we reflect on this verse, may the transforming power of the Spirit, work in all of our lives today.
Lord, let us live this life worthy of your call. Transform us. In Christ name we pray, AMEN.
