Fearful? – Philippians 4:6-13
6 Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
8 Finally, beloved, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is pleasing, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.9 Keep on doing the things that you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, and the God of peace will be with you.
Acknowledgment of the Philippians’ Gift
10 I rejoice in the Lord greatly that now at last you have revived your concern for me; indeed, you were concerned for me, but had no opportunity to show it.11 Not that I am referring to being in need; for I have learned to be content with whatever I have. 12 I know what it is to have little, and I know what it is to have plenty. In any and all circumstances I have learned the secret of being well-fed and of going hungry, of having plenty and of being in need. 13 I can do all things through him who strengthens me.
What does the passage say?
If I would point out the main idea of each verse it will follow;
V. 6-7 Do not worry but pray.
V. 8-9 Focus on “true, noble, reputable, authentic, compelling, gracious – the best, not the worst…Do that and God, who makes everything work together, will work you into his most excellent harmonies” (v. 8-9 The Message).
V. 10-13 I learned how to live content, and in this lifestyle, I see how God makes things possible.
What does the passage say to you and me?
Philippians 4 contains some of the best Bible verses of the Bible. Philippians 4:6-7 reminds us not to swamp ourselves in worries, but instead live in prayer. This verse is a must, to memorize.
We also see Philippians 4:13, ‘I can do all things through him who strengthens me,’ a lot. However, we tend to keep out the context of this verse. Paul is saying, I don’t rely on the support from you. I don’t rely on the worldly materials. Even though they are essential for me to continue in this mission, I learned how God works. First, he taught be how to be content. Not to be weary because of my circumstances. And he taught me how to see who he will work in my life when I am content when my desires are gone.
Does this make sense? Sometimes we might use this verse, out of our own selfishness to gain more. However, God is saying, be content in your life, and don’t ask. God will provide if it is according to God’s will.
These are beautiful verses. Let’s continue to keep it beautiful, through our lives.
Let’s Pray
Lord, thank you for the beautiful testimony of the life of Paul. Help us to understand you like Paul did. Help us to live like Paul, in complete reliance to you. In Christ name we pray, AMEN
