Today's Scripture
Christmas Became Real Isaiah 9:2-7
15 I am not asking you to take them out of the world, but I ask you to protect them from the evil one. 16 They do not belong to the world, just as I do not belong to the world. 17 Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth. 18 As you have sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world. 19 And for their sakes I sanctify myself, so that they also may be sanctified in truth.
RJ's Devotion
WHAT DOES THE PASSAGE say?
V. 15 Jesus intercedes on our behalf to be protected from evil, while we live in the world.
V. 16-17 We do not belong to this world, but sent. Jesus prays that we become sanctified in truth.
V. 18-19 We are sent to this world, on behalf of Jesus. He continues to intercede for us, while we carry on God’s mission.
What Does the passage Mean to Me/US?
John describes Jesus’ pray for his disciples. Before he dies on the cross, he prays for the followers.
His prayer is that God will continue to work in the disciples’ live, who are sent back to the world.
Like Jesus was sent, we are sent to the world, with that prayer.
Do you see how Jesus is still offering this prayer, on your behalf?
“Now I’m returning to you. [God]
I’m saying these things in the world’s hearing
So my people can experience
My joy completed in them.
I gave them your word;
The godless world hated them because of it,
Because they didn’t join the world’s ways,
Just as I didn’t join the world’s ways.
I’m not asking that you take them out of the world
But that you guard them from the Evil One.
They are no more defined by the world
Than I am defined by the world.
Make them holy—consecrated—with the truth;
Your word is consecrating truth.
In the same way that you gave me a mission in the world,
I give them a mission in the world.
I’m consecrating myself for their sakes
So they’ll be truth-consecrated in their mission.”
Prayer
Lord, help us to live like you. We do not belong to this world, but we are sent. Help us to fulfill the mission, as we see the Christ with us. In Christ Name, we pray, AMEN
