Today's Scripture

One Year Bible Daily Reading – Nehemiah 1-3; Luke 19:1-27

Scripture: Luke 1:46-56

46 Mary said,

“With all my heart I glorify the Lord!
47     In the depths of who I am I rejoice in God my savior.
48 He has looked with favor on the low status of his servant.
Look! From now on, everyone will consider me highly favored
49         because the mighty one has done great things for me.
Holy is his name.
50     He shows mercy to everyone,
from one generation to the next,
        who honors him as God.
51 He has shown strength with his arm.
He has scattered those with arrogant thoughts and proud inclinations.
52     He has pulled the powerful down from their thrones
        and lifted up the lowly.
53 He has filled the hungry with good things
and sent the rich away empty-handed.
54 He has come to the aid of his servant Israel,
        remembering his mercy,
55     just as he promised to our ancestors,
to Abraham and to Abraham’s descendants forever.”

What does this passage mean to me/us?

Contributed by Terri Urquhart

“Mary’s song” as these verses are commonly called, expresses Mary’s joy and understanding of the way that God is blessing her. Mary knows that she is considered by society to be as low as a lowly servant, yet the role God has selected her to play during her time on earth is unbelievably amazing. She has the honor to bear Jesus, son of God and be a part of His life more closely than any other human on earth. She knows that all of the world will know who she is and that she will be remembered forever. Yet she is merely an unknown, unimportant, humble child when she learns of this.

Her song goes on to share her thoughts about God’s mercy, strength, and kindness. Do we have to wonder why God chose someone society has seen as insignificant and made her the earthly mother of Jesus? Or do we begin to understand that to God each of us holds the significance of Mary no matter how society views us? Our Lord has put every one of us here for a period of time to work for his glory.

Have we taken the time to ask him what specifically that means to each of us?

Have we taken the time to listen?
