Today's Scripture

One Year Bible Daily Reading – Joshua 1-3; Luke 14:25-35

Scripture: John 19:25-27

25 Jesus’ mother and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene stood near the cross. 26 When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, “Woman, here is your son.” 27 Then he said to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” And from that time on, this disciple took her into his home.

What does this passage mean to me/us?

Contributed by Ron Johnson

It is notable that during His time of great suffering on the cross, Jesus continued to focus on others!  When He saw His mother nearby, accompanied by John, the “disciple He loved”, Jesus said to her, “Behold your son!”.  And to the disciple, “Behold your mother!”.  The Gospel says that from that time on, Mary became a part of John’s household.

How moving it is that Jesus, in the moments nearing death when the Son of Man was about to become the resurrected Christ, made His last act one of caring for His mother!!  We know from the Gospels as well that Mary had other children.  But here at the foot of the cross, it was His trusted disciple John given the responsibility to take Mary into his own household and care for her in her later years.

Yet in this action perhaps was another purpose.  In times to come after the crucifixion, when John was asked by new disciples, in the words of our well-known hymn, “Were You There When They Crucified My Lord”, he could well say yes.  The proof was the care for Mary in John’s own home.  Thus the question for us to consider, who are we caring for that Jesus has unexpectedly given over to us?

Prayer

Lord Jesus, be with me today and let me hear You speak of where You want me to care for Your loved ones too.  Through Your Holy Spirit, may I hear You calling into my life from the cross!

In Jesus name, we pray.  Amen.
