Today's Scripture

TODAY’S READING SCHEDULE: 1 Chronicles 28-29; Luke 4:31-44

Impure Spirit – Luke 4:31-37

31 Then he went down to Capernaum, a town in Galilee, and on the Sabbath he taught the people. 32 They were amazed at his teaching, because his words had authority.

33 In the synagogue there was a man possessed by a demon, an impure spirit. He cried out at the top of his voice, 34 “Go away! What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!”

35 “Be quiet!” Jesus said sternly. “Come out of him!” Then the demon threw the man down before them all and came out without injuring him.

36 All the people were amazed and said to each other, “What words these are! With authority and power he gives orders to impure spirits and they come out!” 37 And the news about him spread throughout the surrounding area.

What does this passage mean to me/us?

Recently, I stumbled on a book called ‘The Death of Satan.’ The premise of the book is that our culture had diminished the work of Satan, in the effort of justifying tragedies to one’s social condition.

It is true that many of the accounts, in the Bible, regarding possessed people correlate with psychotic symptoms. Even though we do not see any abnormal behaviors linked to Satan anymore, it does not mean that Satan does not work in our lives. Satan still works in our world, pulling against the spiritual realm of this world.

We are also called to remember that evil is exposed in front of the pure light. When Jesus spoke in the synagogue, he did not target this possessed man. Jesus shining the true light of truth exposed this person, and in the name of Jesus, he became free. In the same way, we are to acknowledge the work of Satan and continue to shine the pure light of truth wherever Satan may work. Because we know that Satan already lost the battle, and Jesus gave us the authority to conquer evil, in His name.

Prayer

Lord, may your will be done. Help us to be united to your will, and see how you make your ways!
In Christ Name we pray, AMEN.
