United in God’s Will – Luke 1:57-66
57 When the time came for Elizabeth to have her child, she gave birth to a boy. 58 Her neighbors and relatives celebrated with her because they had heard that the Lord had shown her great mercy. 59 On the eighth day, it came time to circumcise the child. They wanted to name him Zechariah because that was his father’s name. 60 But his mother replied, “No, his name will be John.”
61 They said to her, “None of your relatives have that name.” 62 Then they began gesturing to his father to see what he wanted to call him.
63 After asking for a tablet, he surprised everyone by writing, “His name is John.” 64 At that moment, Zechariah was able to speak again, and he began praising God.
65 All their neighbors were filled with awe, and everyone throughout the Judean highlands talked about what had happened. 66 All who heard about this considered it carefully. They said, “What then will this child be?” Indeed, the Lord’s power was with him.
What does this passage mean to me/us?
There are times when following God’s will requires us to be a lone-ranger. We remember Noah, who was a lone-ranger for several decades following God’s will. On the other hand, there are times where we see how God is cultivating a united consensus of God’s will.
It is exciting to see that happening. It might start with a thought or vague idea. The more we ponder and pray about that thought, we see how it becomes clear how God is cultivating the thought. And one day, you might even encounter someone or an event that brings the thought to another level.
Maybe Elizabeth’s idea of John’s name was like that. Gabrial did tell Zacheriah that the baby’s name will be John. However, we are not clear if Zacheriah was able to tell his wife the name of the baby. After all, he was mute during the entire pregnancy, without knowing if when he will be able to speak again. Whether he told Elizabeth or not, she might have this vague idea that the baby’s name could be different. While all the other relatives were expecting that the baby would be named after his father, Elizabeth shares how he should be called John. And when Zachariah concord with her, we see how he was able to speak again.
Imagine the joy both of them experienced. They were filled with joy, not only because Zachariah was able to speak again, but because of seeing the united will of God being realized in their sight. That is the moment that makes us continue on this journey.
Is God’s will being realized in your life?
