TODAY’S READING SCHEDULE: Ezekiel 47-48; John 20
Jesus appears to the disciples – John 20:19-23
19 When it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and the doors of the house where the disciples had met were locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.” 20 After he said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. 21 Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” 22 When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.”
What does this passage mean to me/us?
Jesus appears to his disciples for the first time after his resurrection. He starts with the greeting, “Peace be with you.” It is necessary because the disciples might have been terrified. However, Jesus’ real intention was to share the peace he brings to the world. When there is tension, peace cannot be shared. Jesus came to resolve the peace, we as sinners had with God. Now, as we receive peace through believing in Jesus, he sends us to share those people with the world.
We can’t share the peace with our own might. That is why Jesus shares the Holy Spirit with us. He commands us to receive the Spirit, “he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit.” We pray that the Holy Spirit will become stronger in our life so that we can share the peace with the world.
Please remember the PR mission team in your prayers. Pray that the Holy Spirit overflows in each member’s life so that they can share the peace/light to all they meet!
