Today's Scripture

TODAY’S READING SCHEDULE: Ezekiel 45-46; John 19:23-42

Outpouring of his love – John 19: 31-37

31 It was the Preparation Day and the Jewish leaders didn’t want the bodies to remain on the cross on the Sabbath, especially since that Sabbath was an important day. So they asked Pilate to have the legs of those crucified broken and the bodies taken down. 32 Therefore, the soldiers came and broke the legs of the two men who were crucified with Jesus. 33 When they came to Jesus, they saw that he was already dead so they didn’t break his legs. 34 However, one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and immediately blood and water came out. 35 The one who saw this has testified, and his testimony is true. He knows that he speaks the truth, and he has testified so that you also can believe. 36 These things happened to fulfill the scripture, They won’t break any of his bones.[b] 37 And another scripture says, They will look at him whom they have pierced.

What does this passage mean to me/us?

When Jesus died, he poured out everything for us. When the Roman soldier pierced Jesus, why did the other soldier realize how Jesus ‘testified the truth.’ Didn’t he see many deaths? Didn’t he see how other people bleed to die on the cross?

He, somehow, was able to realize that Jesus was going through the punishment with no real cause. He also, somehow, got to realize that there was a spiritual outpouring of Jesus at that moment.

What Jesus had gone through on the cross is more than torture. It is a spiritual sacrifice and embodiment of God’s love. And we pray that somehow, like the soldier, we will get to see it. We also remember our mission team in Puerto Rico, who safely arrived in Vieques. We pray that their service will be a spiritual outpouring of God’s love to everyone they meet! Remember them in your prayers!

Prayer

Lord, reveal your truth in our lives. Help us to follow you ways. In Christ name we pray, Amen.
