Brag in weakness – 2 Corinthians 12:6-10
6 If I did want to brag, I wouldn’t make a fool of myself because I’d tell the truth. I’m holding back from bragging so that no one will give me any more credit than what anyone sees or hears about me. 7 I was given a thorn in my body because of the outstanding revelations I’ve received so that I wouldn’t be conceited. It’s a messenger from Satan sent to torment me so that I wouldn’t be conceited.
8 I pleaded with the Lord three times for it to leave me alone. 9 He said to me, “My grace is enough for you, because power is made perfect in weakness.” So I’ll gladly spend my time bragging about my weaknesses so that Christ’s power can rest on me. 10 Therefore, I’m all right with weaknesses, insults, disasters, harassments, and stressful situations for the sake of Christ, because when I’m weak, then I’m strong.
What does this passage mean to me/us?
Following our lives to Jesus does not guarantee a worry-free life. Where did that concept even come from? Yes, God will listen to our prayers, and yes, God does heal. However, the greatest blessing in our life is the fact that God is with us, no matter what.
After Saul dedicated his life, he says that he was given this ‘thorn in his life.’ Some scholars say that it might have been ‘Epilepsy.’ He asked for God to remove this thorn, three times, and God did not. In the Message Bible, he says, ‘I was given the gift of a handicap to keep me in constant touch with my limitations.’
The way we understand our limitations might all be different, but the reason why our limitations shouldn’t discourage us is that God’s grace is enough. After asking God to remove the thorn, Paul hears God’s answer saying; “My grace is enough; it’s all you need. My strength comes into its own in your weakness.”
Is God’s grace enough for us?
Prayer
Lord, let us see your grace overflow in our limitations. May your grace be enough for us. In Christ name we pray, Amen.
