TODAY’S READING SCHEDULE: Psalms 110 -112; 2 Corinthians 1
Share the comfort – 2 Corinthians 1:3-5
3 May the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ be blessed! He is the compassionate Father and God of all comfort. 4 He’s the one who comforts us in all our trouble so that we can comfort other people who are in every kind of trouble. We offer the same comfort that we ourselves received from God. 5 That is because we receive so much comfort through Christ in the same way that we share so many of Christ’s sufferings. 6 So if we have trouble, it is to bring you comfort and salvation. If we are comforted, it is to bring you comfort from the experience of endurance while you go through the same sufferings that we also suffer. 7 Our hope for you is certain, because we know that as you are partners in suffering, so also you are partners in comfort.
Brothers and sisters, if a person is caught doing something wrong, you who are spiritual should restore someone like this with a spirit of gentleness. Watch out for yourselves so you won’t be tempted too. 2 Carry each other’s burdens and so you will fulfill the law of Christ. 3 If anyone thinks they are important when they aren’t, they’re fooling themselves. 4 Each person should test their own work and be happy with doing a good job and not compare themselves with others. 5 Each person will have to carry their own load.
What does this passage mean to me/us?
God is full of grace and comfort. God is the real source of our comfort in this world. We might search for other ways to seek comfort, but we know that all efforts fall short. And if we don’t see that comfort in God, we are always invited to be part of that joy.
As Paul says, we ought to share comfort with others. “He’s the one who comforts us in all our trouble so that we can comfort other people who are in every kind of trouble. We offer the same comfort that we received from God. 5 That is because we receive so much comfort through Christ in the same way that we share so many of Christ’s sufferings.”
Sharing comfort with others is to give up our comfort to invite them to God’s comfort. It might require sacrificing time or things to do. The reason why this is possible is that we received so much, but at the same time, participating in God’s suffering brings us the ultimate comfort.
Do we have that comfort?
Prayer
Lord, we thank you for the comfort you pour out in our lives. Help us to share that comfort with the person you call us to share our lives. In Christ name we pray, Amen.
