Today's Scripture

TODAY’S READING SCHEDULE: Psalms 94 -96; Galatians 1

Under Curse – Galatians 1:6-9

I’m amazed that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you by the grace of Christ to follow another gospel. It’s not really another gospel, but certain people are confusing you and they want to change the gospel of Christ. However, even if we ourselves or a heavenly angel should ever preach anything different from what we preached to you, they should be under a curse. I’m repeating what we’ve said before: if anyone preaches something different from what you received, they should be under a curse!

What does this passage mean to me/us?

Paul is sending this letter to the Galatians to remember the grace of God , completed through Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross. The love overflew in his missionary journey to Galatia, but Paul was frustrated how people were walking away from the original teaching of grace.

He uses a strong word against anyone who prompted the church to walk away from the truth; ‘they should be under a curse.’ How can he say that? Aren’t we a religion of love?

If we are by our actions, words, or life cause anyone to stumble in faith, even Jesus has harsh words to say. In the Gospel Jesus says,  “If anyone causes one of these little ones—those who believe in me—to stumble, it would be better for them to have a large millstone hung around their neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea” (Matthew 18:6).

It means that our life should focus on encouraging people to faith, not becoming a stumbling block. It shows that we need to carefully check our lives and see if we might become a stumbling block to anyone, and quickly change our lives.

Prayer

Lord, help us to follow and share your ways only. If we might become a stumbling block, change us first. In Christ name we pray, Amen.
