Passion to share – Acts 20:7-12
7 On the first day of the week, as we gathered together for a meal, Paul was holding a discussion with them. Since he was leaving the next day, he continued talking until midnight. 8 There were many lamps in the upstairs room where we had gathered. 9 A young man named Eutychus was sitting in the window. He was sinking into a deep sleep as Paul talked on and on. When he was sound asleep, he fell from the third floor and died. 10 Paul went down, fell on him and embraced him, then said, “Don’t be alarmed. He’s alive!” 11 Then Paul went back upstairs and ate. He talked for a long time—right up until daybreak—then he left. 12 They took the young man away alive, and they were greatly comforted.
What does this passage mean to me/us?
When I used to fly over to Korea, I spent the night packing and didn’t sleep before the flight. My rationale was to push myself to sleep during the entire trip, so I can adjust to the time difference. Of course, I can’t do that anymore.
Paul, on the other hand, is preaching and teaching until the very last moment of his journey, before leaving on a ship to Assos.
Instead of packing, Paul used the last moment to share more about following Jesus. It says, “Paul was holding a discussion with them. Since he was leaving the next day, he continued talking until midnight.” He wanted to have every moment to count. He tried to pour out, as much as he could, before he would set out on the journey.
We also see the passion of the people not wanting to miss a single word and teaching from Paul. They did not leave the house, and even though they were tired, they stayed. At one point, we see how Eutychus fell from the window to the ground. The reason why he was sitting in the window would have been because of the crowd gathered. The reason why he fell asleep might have been due to being tired. However, not being able to hear much, he might have contributed him to lose focus. He still stayed because he wanted to learn the way. We see how passion was mutual.
Are we passionately following the way? Do we have a community to share and grow in our passion for following? Can we build that community together?
Prayer
Lord, help us be passionate for your ways, together. In Your Name, we pray, Amen.
