Today's Scripture
TODAY’S READING SCHEDULE: Jeremiah 6 -8; Matthew 21:23 -46
two sons- Matthew 21:28-32
28 “What do you think? A man had two sons. Now he came to the first and said, ‘Son, go and work in the vineyard today.’
29 “‘No, I don’t want to,’ he replied. But later he changed his mind and went.
30 “The father said the same thing to the other son, who replied, ‘Yes, sir.’ But he didn’t go.
31 “Which one of these two did his father’s will?”
They said, “The first one.”
Jesus said to them, “I assure you that tax collectors and prostitutes are entering God’s kingdom ahead of you. 32 For John came to you on the righteous road, and you didn’t believe him. But tax collectors and prostitutes believed him. Yet even after you saw this, you didn’t change your hearts and lives and you didn’t believe him.
What does this passage mean to me/us?
Jesus points out the hypocrisy of the Jewish leaders.
They might have said ‘yes’ to follow God’s way, but in reality, aren’t.
He points out, that the tax collectors and prostitutes are like the first son who initially said, ‘no’ but turned around and responded with a ‘yes’ to God’s way. On the other hand, he is rebuking the leaders on how they initially said ‘yes’ but never fully committed to following God’s will. At the same time, we see how he opens up a new possibility for these leaders, who are rejecting Jesus, that they can always come back like the first son.
God is waiting for us to follow God’s will. God is waiting for us today.
