TODAY’S READING SCHEDULE: Jeremiah 1 -2; Matthew 20:17 -34
May God’s will be done – Matthew 20:20-28
20 Then the mother of Zebedee’s sons came to Jesus along with her sons. Bowing before him, she asked a favor of him.
21 “What do you want?” he asked.
She responded, “Say that these two sons of mine will sit, one on your right hand and one on your left, in your kingdom.”
22 Jesus replied, “You don’t know what you’re asking! Can you drink from the cup that I’m about to drink from?”
They said to him, “We can.”
23 He said to them, “You will drink from my cup, but to sit at my right or left hand isn’t mine to give. It belongs to those for whom my Father prepared it.”
24 Now when the other ten disciples heard about this, they became angry with the two brothers. 25 But Jesus called them over and said, “You know that those who rule the Gentiles show off their authority over them and their high-ranking officials order them around. 26 But that’s not the way it will be with you. Whoever wants to be great among you will be your servant. 27 Whoever wants to be first among you will be your slave— 28 just as the Human One[b] didn’t come to be served but rather to serve and to give his life to liberate many people.”
What does this passage mean to me/us?
Sometimes life throws a curveball, and navigating through that curveball can bring blessings.
I won’t be able to share all the details on today’s reflection, but I just got to know a secret that was kept from me for the past 20 years.
There was a time, I wanted to avoid hardship, and asked if my father can reach out to some influential people and have me put in a comfortable position. The deal did not work out, and all along, I thought the one whom my father reached out and asked the favor turned it down. It turns out, he never asked the favor on my behalf, and instead asked for God’s will to be done (if anyone wants to hear the detail of this story, please let me know, I’m happy to share it with you).
What the mother of James and John was asking for Jesus, was her will to be done.
Jesus shares how God’s will be done in their lives. It was different from what they expected, but it was to glorify God’s name.
When we ask for God’s will, we might see things happening different from what we expected, but in the end, we will see how God’s will is done and His name glorified.
Prayer
Lord, have your will be done in our life. In the name of Jesus, we pray, AMEN.
