TODAY’S READING SCHEDULE: 1 Kings 6 -7; Matthew 7
Judgment – Matthew 7:1-6
“Don’t judge, so that you won’t be judged. 2 You’ll receive the same judgment you give. Whatever you deal out will be dealt out to you. 3 Why do you see the splinter that’s in your brother’s or sister’s eye, but don’t notice the log in your own eye? 4 How can you say to your brother or sister, ‘Let me take the splinter out of your eye,’ when there’s a log in your eye? 5 You deceive yourself! First take the log out of your eye, and then you’ll see clearly to take the splinter out of your brother’s or sister’s eye. 6 Don’t give holy things to dogs, and don’t throw your pearls in front of pigs. They will stomp on the pearls, then turn around and attack you.
What does this passage mean to me/us?
Lately, the church is framed by a perception of being judgmental. I do agree that framing the church to be judgmental is also a judgment, but it shows that we are being judged by our judgmental track of records. Which also shows that Jesus’ warning has been realized in our eyes; “Don’t judge, so that you won’t be judged. 2 You’ll receive the same judgment you give” (Matthew 7:1-2).
Then the question is how we can live a life without judgment.
I think prejudice comes when we fail in closing the gap. When we are far away from each other, we build pre-conceived notions toward the other person. When we get closer to others, we also experience how many of those notions were wrong. When we don’t close that gap, it can become a judgment.
That is why I think God came to this world. God came to this world to close the gap and tear down the walls of any pre-conceived notions. When we benefit from the Lord who came to the world, a question can be asked; ‘why aren’t we doing the same?’
Who is that person we need to close the gap that stands between us?
Prayer
Lord, we want to follow what you have done for us. Help us to reach out to others in love. In the name of Jesus, we pray, AMEN.
