Today's Scripture

TODAY’S READING SCHEDULE: Leviticus 4-5; Hebrews 7

Jesus is the final High Priest…Hebrews 7: 24-28

But, on the other hand, Jesus holds His priesthood permanently and without change, because He lives on forever. Therefore He is able also to save forever (completely, perfectly, for eternity) those who come to God through Him, since He always lives to intercede and intervene on their behalf [with God]. It was fitting for us to have such a High Priest [perfectly adapted to our needs], holy, blameless, unstained [by sin], separated from sinners and exalted higher than the heavens; who has no day by day need, like those high priests, to offer sacrifices, first of all for his own [personal] sins and then for those of the people, because He [met all the requirements and] did this once for all when He offered up Himself [as a willing sacrifice]. For the Law appoints men as high priests who are weak [frail, sinful, dying men], but the word of the oath [of God], which came after [the institution of] the Law, permanently appoints [as a priest] a Son who has been made perfect forever.

What does this passage mean to me/us?  Contributed by Sarah Pero

This is such a perfect time of year to be studying Hebrews because this scripture has reminded us of the great sacrifice Jesus made for us by dying on the Cross. Jesus was the perfect High Priest because He was the perfect offering. He offered the one final and perfect sacrifice, Himself. William Barclay, in his commentary states, “Man seeks the presence of God; man’s sin has erected a barrier between him and God but he is restless until he rests in God; and Jesus alone is the priest who can bring the offering that can open the way back to God for men. In eternity, as He was in time, Jesus exists to be of service to mankind. That is why He is our complete Savior. On earth he served men and gave His life for them; in Heaven He stills exists to make intercession for them. Jesus is the priest forever, the one who is forever opening the door to the love and friendship of God and is forever the great servant of mankind.” During Lent, we spend time reflecting on our lives and asking Jesus to guide us to leave behind all those things which separate us from our relationship with Him. We would be so lost without Him!

Prayer

Dearest Lord Jesus, thank you for being our final High Priest. When we accept you as Savior and Lord of our lives, you lead us every day and give us forgiveness for sin when we come to you with penitent hearts. The sacrifice of your sinless life has set us free from sin and gives us hope for eternal life with you. In Your Name we pray, Amen
