Today's Scripture
TODAY’S READING SCHEDULE: Proverbs 13-15; Titus 2
Titus 2:7-8 NIV
“In everything set them an example by doing what is good. In your teaching show integrity, seriousness and soundness of speech that cannot be condemned, so that those who oppose you may be ashamed because they have nothing bad to say about us.”
Titus 2:11-14 NIV
“For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men. It teaches us to say ‘No’ to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age, while we wait for the blessed hope—the glorious appearing of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good.”
What does this passage mean to me/us? Contributed by Luci Wright
In this chapter, Paul advises Titus on what to teach to various groups within the church in Crete. He outlines qualities that men and women of all ages should aspire to in living their lives as a witness to their faith. Some of the characteristics include temperance, love, reverence, integrity and self-control. Even slaves can show their faith by how they respond to their master.
Titus is probably a young man and may not have been well known to the believers in Crete. Therefore, Paul is also encouraging him to live his life as an example of his teaching. If Titus can live in such an exemplary manner, then no one can discredit his Christian teachings.
This passage still speaks to us today as we all know the old saying that “actions speak louder than words.” Our country no longer has an underlying assumption of Christianity. We are a diverse nation of many faiths as well as a continuum of Christianity that ranges from ultra conservative to liberal along with atheism. In this current climate, we need to actively demonstrate Jesus’ gospel of love through our words and actions. We can affirm Paul’s statement that God’s grace brings salvation to all people and try to live accordingly.
Prayer
Gracious God, fill our hearts with your love. Enable us to absorb your word and direction for our lives so that we may truly live our faith daily. We confess that we have often failed to demonstrate your gift of love in our relationships. Enable us to receive the strength of the Holy Spirit so as to live as your people. In Jesus name. Amen.
