TODAY’S READING SCHEDULE: Job 41-42; 1 Corinthians 14:1-20 (CEB)
Job sees the Lord and repents – Job 42:3-6
Then Job replied to the Lord:
2 “I know that you can do all things;
no purpose of yours can be thwarted.
3 You asked, ‘Who is this that obscures my plans without knowledge?’
Surely I spoke of things I did not understand,
things too wonderful for me to know.
4 “You said, ‘Listen now, and I will speak;
I will question you,
and you shall answer me.’
5 My ears had heard of you
but now my eyes have seen you.
6 Therefore I despise myself
and repent in dust and ashes.”
What does this passage mean to me/us? Contributed by Larry Dickenson
In this last chapter of the Book of Job, following a succession of life tragedies and extended debates with his friends about their meaning, Job has come face to face with the two great realities of life as a human on earth.
The first reality is the overwhelming wonder and sovereignty of the Lord our Creator.
The second reality is utter smallness of his own life.
He has come face to face with God the Creator, the Sustainer, the Lord of All, the Source of Wisdom, the great I AM. All Job can say now is:
“I know You can do all things, things to wonderful for me to know”
“I had heard of You, but now I see You, and can only repent in dust and ashes.”
But even Job had not yet seen the final chapter God would write; the chapter titled “Jesus – Grace – Love”. In the wisdom of the ages, the season of Lent was established as a time for us to clearly see that final chapter. To be confronted with
the greatness of God against our own smallness and insignificance, no matter our role, station or accomplishment in this life. But then to also see how God our loving Creator, where there seemed to be no way, made a way…the only way, for us to come face to face with God, cleansed of our sins and restored to a right relationship with God. Forever!
Praise be to God for that last chapter, “Jesus – Grace – Love”.
How clearly are we seeing God’s greatness? If not very clear yet, Job shows us the path, recognizing the reality of my sin and repenting, holding tightly to the freeing grace of Jesus.
Prayer
Dear gracious Lord and Creator,
I come into your Holy and Mighty presence Lord, seeking your mercy, solely by the grace of Jesus Christ, my Savior. Strengthen me to see myself clearly as Your precious child, that I can walk through this life in freedom, and not the chains of sin. Help me to repent and build a foundation in Jesus Christ that will endure.
In the name of Jesus, Amen.
