Today's Scripture

I Corinthians 1:10

TODAY’S READING SCHEDULE: Job 1-2; 1 Corinthians 1 (CEB)

“I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another in what you say and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly united in mind and thought.”(The Message)

What does it mean to me/ us – Contributed by Sue McCoy

I am sure this verse spoke to me because of our recent news from the General Conference. This verse is part of Paul’s letter to the people of Corinth. Paul had moved on to spread the gospel to other areas, when he received news that the people of Corinth were choosing various leaders/teachers/preachers, and forming a “following” for that person. In addition each group was finding fault with the other groups. Wow does history repeat itself!!! Our lives are filled with everyone taking sides and then picking apart people and programs who do no agree with us. Paul stated that the church is not a popularity contest! We, the church, should be a community of people centered around Jesus, servants of Jesus. Paul also responded to the problems of Corinth with something from the gospel, the good news of Jesus. We should follow his example by learning to think every area of life through the lens of the gospel. Our calling by God is based on his sovereign love. We also need to follow his model and use the love he has for us, as the basis for the love we have for others. We must learn to live out what we say we believe. “I believe in God, the father, maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only son, our Lord.” Where is your focus and what does your life exemplify? Focus on your heart and the outpouring of love that you can share with all of God’s children, so that you can be “perfectly united in mind and thought.”

Prayer

Heavenly Creator, Thank you for the words of Paul that can help us discern the ways of you and your son Jesus Christ. Show us how to love freely and to reach out to those who are hurting. Give us your direction as to the next steps in this journey of loving others. Forgive us, dear God, for those words and actions which have not been loving and have not reflected the gospel. Motivate us to study your gospel so that we can understand and live out the teachings of Jesus, your instrument for our salvation. In Jesus name, Amen.
