Today's Scripture

community – Thessalonians 3:1-5

TODAY’S READING SCHEDULE: Exodus 14-15; 1 Thessalonians 3(CEB)

So when we couldn’t stand it any longer, we thought it was a good idea to stay on in Athens by ourselves, and we sent you Timothy, who is our brother and God’s coworker in the good news about Christ. We sent him to strengthen and encourage you in your faithfulness. We didn’t want any of you to be shaken by these problems. You know very well that we were meant to go through this. In fact, when we were with you, we kept on predicting that we were going to face problems exactly like what happened, as you know. That’s why I sent Timothy to find out about your faithfulness when I couldn’t stand it anymore. I was worried that the tempter might have tempted you so that our work would have been a waste of time.

What does this passage mean to me/us

Paul and Silas traveled and ministered to the people of Thessalonica for a brief time. The time Paul was there, he was involved in many riots of the people, which eventually had them leave. In such a short period, Paul and the people created a bond.
Such that he says, “So when we couldn’t stand it any longer, … and we sent you Timothy.”
I had to pause and think how was this possible? If the time he spent and Thessalonica was short and filled with turmoil, how could he have a bond with these people?

The bond and love came from the common goal; the pursuit of God’s mission.
That is the reason why Paul rejoices of the report of the people faithfully following God’s direction.
When the common goal is clear, we can rejoice in our community.

I’m writing this, while I’m waiting for the flight to St. Louis.
Ironically, we live in a time, where we might have forgotten the common goal – to make disciples of Jesus.
Seems like a try to figure out how to get there, by forgetting what we are pursuing.
I pray that we come back to rejoicing in our common goal, our call.

May God’s guidance be among all delegates.

Prayer

Lord, may the word of my mouth and the mediation of my heart be worthy in front of you.  In Christ name, we pray, AMEN.
